I've been meaning to do this for a while, but today is the only time I've been feeling productive enough. You see, it has come to my attention that a lot of people don't know what Umineko No Naku Koro Ni is. This could be due to several factors, either the anime's lack of popularity or sense-making, the relatively unknown status of the much-better visual novels, or the fact that everyone remembers Higurashi for it's killer lolis and disturbing laughs.

So, I am here to change that! Umineko is a good clusterfuck of a series that everyone should check out, at least once. I've already done a post on it explaining the premise, and I do trust that everyone on my flist is proficient in Googleese. So, with that in mind, I will go straight to the real reason everyone should see Umineko: That it so exemplifies the trope titling this post that it's not even funny. Except it is.

So, first, the characters. Now, there are a metric fuckton of them, and they are all awesome, so I'm just going to do the most wtf ones.

Umineko features:

A perveted main character that is both intelligent and kind of nice despite jokingly making a pass at his nine-year-old cousin.
A main villain that is a complete sadistic, S&M loving,  murderous bitch, an elegant lady, a childish brat, and a complex tragic heroine all at once. Also she and main character guy have some amazing UST.
A nine-year-old who may or may not be a sociopath but is still the most adorable thing ever.
A large group of anthropomorphized murder weapons, including seven stakes represent the seven deadly sins and rifle bunnygirls, all with a very curious aversion to pants.
A demon butler with a monocle and a pornstache.
A pair of evil loli lesbian witches.
A group of normals who are all badass. No, seriously, all of them.
Including the crazy absinthe-addicted grandpa with a giant boner for the main villain witch.
Some badass nuns. Without pants.
And a very fashionable demon.

That, of course, is just the characters. If you're still not convinced you need this series in your life, just take a look at the shit that happens. Note: This contains some very vague spoilers for later games.

The wtf-ness doesn't really set in til the second game, but the first one features some contenders. Like the way one of the first victims is found with half her face destroyed. So she can be recognized.
Or how, at the end of the game, the mysterious witch who supposedly wasn't real appears in front of our main character, and he proceeds to deny she exists while she's standing in front of him.
And then they start  their second game, and people are killed by having their innards pulled out and replaced with festive Halloween candy.
Oh, and did I mention that everyone dies at the end of each arc, and then is timewarped back to that same two days to be murdered all over again?
And that, the one time our protagonist surrenders, he's rewarded by being paraded around naked in a dog collar and then eaten by goatmen?
And a woman is forced to eat her creatively-prepared siblings.
And is later killed several times by being drowned in a sea of jello, buried under a mountain of cake, and then turned into a butterfly and eaten by a spider.
The person who does this to her is a part of her sister's soul that somehow got witch status.
There's a gigantic magical battle. The main character denies it happened by saying there's not evidence of it afterward. Despite the fact he saw it.
There's more than that but I think I've spoiled everybody enough, so I'll leave you with this:

At one point in time a woman is accused of sleeping with her aged father-in-law while dressed up as his dead mistress. Yes, this series is 100 times more fucked up than Higurashi. Or anything, really.

If you want a summary that makes more sense (which I'm sure you do), here's the Wikipedia article (watch for spoilers):

If you're interested in watching the anime or playing the games, there's links to both in this post here.  Please note that the games hate both Macs and Windows 7, although I've had better luck with Windows 7.

Umineko is seriously considered unknown? It seems like everyone and their mother is talking about it.

Really? Well, I guess what I mean is that not a lot of people have seen it, or played the games. At least as far as I know.

It could just be the crowd I hang out in or something...but there's a huge cast of it in Amat, and most of my flist is into it. In fact I've gotten to where I have total Hype Aversion to it.

Well, don't let the hype make you avoid it. I know you're probably tired of hearing this, but it really is a good series, lack of sense-making aside.

I might look into it eventually. I don't know if I can right now, though--I had a friend that wouldn't shut up about it, and then stopped speaking to me when I told her it was silly to complain about Hetalia fangirls not shutting up about their fandom. XD; So I kinda associate it with all sorts of annoying qualities right now.

It might be too horror based for me, too...I'm not sure.

I have a feeling it's a good show, but probably not in my taste XD;; See, I'm the type of person that thinks that Gurren Lagann is THE BEST SHOW EVAR KTHXBAI 8DDDDDD.....And I'm guessing that kind of person, knowing what Gurren Lagann is and its core spirit, might not be so into the Higurashi/Umineko sort of thing? ^^;;

Well, in spite of the horrible violence/depressingness/general nightmare fuel, Umineko has a pretty optimistic core, and it definitely has it's ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWAH moments.

For the record, I can't stand horror/grotesque shows/anime/etc. But... Umineko did not bother me. I had to close my eyes a few times during the anime, but that's not the same as the VNs.

Anyway, A++

I'm with Haley on how it doesn't seem like it's under the radar or unknown, but like she said, that's because there's a really big cast in Amat who talk about Umineko a lot. And I have a friend from there who's positively obsessed with it, as well as a few people on my f-list who talk about it a lot, too.

I guess it's who I hang out with. I play Beatrice over at capeandcowl and no one there knows her canon.

Yeah, it can depend on the game. I played Battler at sortinghat_rp for a short time, but he had no castmates to play with there and pretty much no one knew his canon.

Have you considered looking for castmates or games with castmates on dear_mun? Quite a few of them post on there.

All do you say here is good. I'm obsessed with umineko so you do not need to tell me about it. I think it have a bit few bad things really.

1- When you want to get the novels try to do it in holidays or something because it can be fatal if you try it at exam time for example.

2- You would probably start to deny everything and start to rationalize everything strange you see. that might be a problem

But it has too many good things. So the best thing is to read it.
